Church News (Past Events)

CHRISTMAS (2009)
Our Sunday School children and our church family assisted a family in need to have a very Merry Christmas. Staples and fresh food were collected for a wonderful Christmas dinner and staples were given to help fill their pantry. Gifts were also given to the children and stockings filled for all the children that come to the food pantry at St. James Lutheran Church in Union Bridge.

There were 2 Christmas trees with paper bulbs designating wanted items. One downstairs in the Sunday School for the children and another in our Narthex. Combining both trees, there were almost 100 bulbs decorating the trees and all of them were taken and requested items brought in. A tremendous thank you to everyone for their very generous support for this worthwhile endeavor. Your thoughtful giving was heartfelt by the family and our committee and Sunday School. Our example most certainly taught and guided our children as they learn to give and help those in need. Thank you.

RALLY DAY (September 2009)
Our Sunday School Rally Day, "Party With Jesus!" was held on September 13th as the children celebrated Jesus' miracles. The children followed our "newspaper person" (Valerie Rutherford) as she led them through and around the church into the fellowship hall to celebrate together with many activities in and outside. The children made fish wind socks to represent Jesus feeding 5000, crafted clay bowls for Jesus changing water into wine at the wedding in Canaan, made celebration sticks and a Jesus people chain for the many Jesus healed. Each class enjoyed breaking a Pinata to celebrate the Prodigal Son comes home and being together again and the fun games of fishing the river as Jesus did with his disciples and following the relay race home. Celebrate they did with everyone having a wonderful time. Following our centers, the children gathered together as Joyce introduced "Squiggle", and our new Bata fish with our "good deeds" bowl. We ended with prayer, a special celebration song by Cathie Luetje and delicious refreshments for all.

A tremendous thank you to so many who gave of their time and talents to make the day so special for our children.

STRAWBERRY FESTIVAL (2009)
What a beautiful day we had - bright, sunny, warm (but not too hot), friendly and very hungry people!

We started this special day on Thursday, we set up Fellowship Hall, arranged the kitchen for easy access for serving, cooked and chopped chicken for the chicken salad, checked to make sure everything was available and got ourselves acclimated. Saturday morning (8:30am) brought many members and friends out to cap 152 quarts of strawberries (however, we capped an additional 28 quarts later in the day). Then our helpers prepared chicken salad sandwiches (with sandwiches and chicken salad platters we used 60 pounds of chicken salad). Outside the chicken fryers and the funnel cakes, french fries and hot dogs are starting to get themselves ready for the public. Those hungry people started arriving around 11 a.m. Our Treasures Table was well received with lookers coming around 9 a.m. Our baked goods table was a big hit as always. The grab bags were a big attraction for the kids. The Cake Walks later in the day brought people out with the hope of winning a home made cake.

As you can see by the following recap of the day this day was very successful.

This day would not have been successful if it was not for the St. Luke's family that came out and volunteered their time. This wonderful event takes very little time or effort when many people come out to help. Everyone should be proud of the success of this day and the funds that St. Lukes provided to Carroll County Food Sunday.

We could not have made this happen if it was not for the families, friends and members of St. Lukes. We hope to see all of you again next year and hope you had a good time eating and socializing. If you would like to join in on the fun and help, (you get free entertainment), come to one of our planning meetings next year. See you then.

Vacation Bible School (2009)
During the week of July 13th, we had our annual VBS. Our theme was Studio Go! Game show; complete with a spinning game wheel helping us to lead, risk, tell, obey and serve. Approximately 35 children participated enjoying Bible stories, crafts, music, outdoor games and, of course, special snacks relating to the story focus of the evening. Our families are also participating in a service project, "Supporting Our Troops", preparing care packages for a troop of 13 soldiers stationed at Camp Taji in Iraq. The daily offering for the week will be given to The Least of These Ministries. We are most appreciative of everyone's support with both worthwhile endeavors. Thanks to our week of volunteers.

ST. LUKE'S YOUTH MISSION TRIP (2009)
During the week of June 22nd to 26th, A.R.K. (Act of Random Kindness) was performed by 10 of our youth and several adults from St. Luke's who participated in a Mission Trip to New Oxford, PA, where they gave their time and energy scraping and painting a two-story home for a senior citizen. The youth worked hard and managed to have fun, too. We are very proud of them and their accomplishments. To complete this job in five days seemed impossible, but working as a team the impossible was made possible.

Thank you to all who gave of their personal time and efforts to see this A.R.K. to completion.

OUTDOOR SERVICE & BIBLE BLESSING PICNIC (May 2009)
On May 17th, we had our outdoor service indoors due to the rainy weather. The children learned of God's creations and "All Things Bright and Beautiful" along with planting our "Seeds of Hope" for our fall harvest. Look for our new garden by the swings and our "Seed of Hope" wagon to be filled with staples for those in need. Our Sunday School children also sang and led us with a fun "Hallelujah" song. Following our service and Bible Blessing, everyone enjoyed a delicious picnic luncheon. Special thanks to everyone that participated.

THE GIVING TREE (January to March 2009)
A thank you goes out to all the folks who have decked the Confirmation Classes "Giving Tree" in Fellowship Hall. Your donations were distributed to those needy eating at the Shepherd's Table in Westminster. Since cold weather doesn't stop in February we're asking you to once more cover the Giving Tree with scarves, socks, mittens, and gloves. On March 20th, St. Luke's will be serving another meal to those in need and your gifts will bring warmth to others. Thank you - St Luke's Confirmation Class.

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING (February 2009)
The 907 club raised $401.78 in donations on Souper Bowl of Caring Sunday! Great thanks to all who opened their hearts to support this event. It is appreciated that you were able to endure the clanging of the soup pots following services - hopefully, your ears are not still ringing!!

The 907 club members will go on a shopping excursion to "STOCK" the Pantry for those in need (with this amount of money, it may take several different excursions!)
The club "kicked off" the Souper Bowl of Caring event, by enjoying breakfast SOUP at our meeting in January and we will enjoy a game of "BOWL"ing after our shopping excursion. Feel free to check with a club member to inquire which members received the title of being a super bowler!

Again - a tremendous thanks to all contributors and to the 907 members who participated in our game show skit and soup pot clanging!

CARROLL COUNTY FOOD SUNDAY DONATIONS (2008)
Helping those less fortunate - that's what it is all about during the year. We at St. Luke's contributed 470 pounds of canned food to Carroll County Food Sunday for 2008. Let's continue this giving during this new year (2009). Thanks to all contributors!

CHRISTMAS 2008 (Children)
This Christmas, our Sunday School and Confirmation children participated in a special play for those stopping at our church for caroling. The skit was wonderful and left everyone with much thought and reflection.

Our annual Christmas pageant, "Reason for the Season", was presented by our older Sunday School children on January 4th (snow/ice date). The pageant was wonderful and was enjoyed by everyone. All the Sunday School children also sang Christmas songs. Following, special treats were given to the children by the R & R Group and refreshments were served for all.

This Christmas Season, our Sunday School children participated in 3 different giving projects helping children in need by filling "brown bags" with health items, school supplies, holiday and snack items. Christmas stocking were also filled for children of all ages. Food items were brought in to fill baskets for families plus many bags of extra foods for their pantries. Two very filled baskets with turkeys were filled for two families.

FRIENDSHIP SUNDAY (November 2008)
The E-Team thanks all who participated in Friendship Sunday. The worship service was grand with bells and special music from the choirs, a moving skit from the Sunday School class, and a wonderful sermon. The confirmands helped the team in the kitchen, Fellowship Hall, and as greeters. And as usual, the congregation helped provide a scrumptious feast. So thanks everyone, including our guests who made it extra special. A good time was had by all.

RALLY DAY (September 2008)
What a wonderful day we had as we learned to "Grow With Jesus". We began our new Sunday School year with a special story about a little boy who learned that even if we make a wrong decision Jesus is always with us and he will help us to keep a "clean heart". Following our story, the children assembled with their Sunday School Classes to participate in the special activities at the stations in the Fellowship Hall. The children made special "Grow With Jesus" book beads, made a leaf rubbing to put on our new "Grow With Jesus" banner which will hang in the Fellowship Hall, sponge painted heart banners to take home and went outside to "jump the rivers" in the Bible. We then gathered outside forming a circle to sing, "Joy, Joy, Joy, We Have Joy in Our Hearts", and praised the Lord in song. Refreshments followed. Everyone had a great time and looked forward to beginning our new Sunday School year. A special thanks to everyone that participated. Thank you for your time and efforts to help make our Rally Day a success.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL (July 2008)
During the week of July 14th to July 18th, our church along with Pipe Creek Church of the Brethren held our VBS program, "God's Big Backyard". The children had a wonderful time learning Bible stories, singing many songs along with an active DVD, and enjoying many crafts relating to their Bible stories. It was a great week of fun and fellowship with one another.

We extend special thanks for the many hours of time and effort given by Hal Perrin, Cathie Luetje, Laurie Penn, Joe & Gail Bindus, Lauren Bindus, Christina Carroll, Carrah & Gary Holmes, Nikki Matteson, Jamie & David Jordan, Jennie Penn, Susan Mannix, Rachel & Andrew Chubb, J.T. Bassler, Cooper Luetje, Lauren & Brooke Mannix, Joyce Brozik and our friends at Pipe Creek. We are also most appreciative of the many donations that were sent in for our closing activities, snacks for the children and everyone's support for this worthwhile program.
